Hello, there! I'm

Paul Roach.

I have a few ideas.

I'm an ambitious designer, creator, maker, software and computer engineer set on creating simple and creative solutions to complex problems. Lately, I am developing autonomous robotic soil sampling systems for golf course turf management at Land Maverick.

About Me

Hi! I'm Paul, and I enjoy building interactive human-computer experiences. For as long as I can remember, I've been inspired by our ability to invent and program computers and robots that solve real world problems.

Experience

Professional Work

Robotic Systems Engineer
@ Land Maverick

November 2020 - Present

  • chevron_right Leading a team designing autonomous navigation systems for mobile outdoor soil nutrient sampling robots
  • chevron_right Developed autonomous navigation and optical-based obstacle avoidance algorithms for outdoor turf soil sampling robots using SLAM ToF depth cameras, OpenCV, C++ on Unix-based embedded SoC systems
  • chevron_right Researched and developed automatic quality control testing system for soil nutrient sensors to reduce human interaction by 95%
  • chevron_right Integrated brushless motor controllers with self-built movement and positioning programs
Software Development Intern
@ DLL Solutions

May 2019 - August 2020

  • chevron_right Led a project to retrofit 60 industrial fermentation tank temperature controllers with IoT gateways for data collection and remote visualization
  • chevron_right Assisted in management of data historian applications for nationwide utility and power generation industries using OSIsoft PI, Azure and AWS
Automated Packaging Machine Operator
@ Ipswich Ale

May 2017-August 2018

  • chevron_right Installed new automated packing machinery and provided start-up support and diagnostics
  • chevron_right Assisted floor engineers in diagnosing and repairing many issues with packing and filling machines
  • chevron_right Optimized workflow settings on canning machinery allowing fewer operating hours and costs

Projects

Here's some of my work

Featured Project

3D Printed Quadrupedal Robot

An autonomous legged robot companion inspired by the Boston Dynamics Spot and MIT Mini Cheetah projects. Self-designed strong, high-precision, 3D printed joint actuators independently controlled by real-time inverse-kinematics and collision-avoidance models.
  • 3D Printing
  • Fusion 360
  • C/C++
  • Python
  • Godot
Featured Project

Food Nutrition Detecting App

A program that determines and displays accurate nutrition information of plated food, including calories, fats, and carbohydrates. Leveraging the power of convolutional neural networks, this program independtly detects what type of foods are on the plate, where on the plate those foods are, and how much of it there is.
  • Machine Learning
  • Image Processing
  • Matlab
Featured Project

Passive-Acoustic Microphone Array

An 8-channel microphone array designed to monitor an outdoor environment. A trained model classifies sounds recorded from the device, specifically detecting and labeling several species of New England birds. An accompanying beamforming algorithm detects the relative direction of arrival of the sound source in the environment. This team project achieved second place in our senior design competition.
  • Matlab
  • Python
  • C++
  • Raspberry Pi
  • Audio DAC/ADC
